Plein Air #10 by Caelan (critique requested)

Plein Air #10 (critique requested)

Caelan

Yesterday morning’s plein air. Slowly starting to pick up a process for this, but coming up with more questions than answers as I go along! (Am I seeing shadows on the opposite side of the water ripple from the highlight? Or is that just the true color showing through below and ALL of the lighter parts are light-facing planes? Cause like, how can something that transparent cast a visible shadow when it is just a few inches thick? This might merit some asking around and research…) But, hey! Having questions means I’ve gained enough of a base level grasp to have said inquiries.

Anyway, 8” x 10” Acrylic on canvas paper. Oh, and here’s a photo.

Every single time you do this it looks even better than the last one. I really wish I could do landscapes like this, especially in Acrylic.

Thank you! I could feel some of the practice accumulating in this one, hah. And really, if you want to be able to do landscapes, just get practicing! Mine were not great until a few years ago when I started giving them a lot more specific attention.

        What did you start with?

Just a lot of photo studies, really... you want to do a mix of studies and trying to come up with your own stuff. It doesn't have to all be super finished, either, just make a lot of stuff and be okay with it not being that great for a while! On a lot of my photo studies I'd spend maybe 30min-1 hour? Which is not to say that important is fast, but rather: Stay general, don't get into tiny details unless everything else has been established.
If you are doing digital work, you can find a photo you like and duplicate it in photoshop (or whatever), then erase the duplicate (this is just to get the same size ratio) and try to paint what you see in the photo. Try your best to avoid using the color picker unless you are just stumped with being unable to match what you see, then figure out why it looks different (probably due to the colors around it influencing how a color is perceived.) Pay attention to things like atmospheric distance changes, value, lighting... if you have a lot of trouble with one of these, focus on it, maybe read up on it. If things are hard, it means you are learning.

Learning is always hard, I've become well aware of that.. but I might give this a try because I have long wanted to create the places I've written in Dae'fagaial. I don't feel confident in my ability to create landscapes.

Yeah, go for it! Being able to fully illustrate your headworld is a great feeling. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, too.

Ahaha. I just have to find the motivation, which is currently difficult... but I hope I can find the drive to do it.
