Underbite Beastie (critique requested)

Caelan

I’ve been playing with different creature designs over the last few days, and a lot of drawing both fish and dogs let me to this underbite beastie. Two shades of Prismacolor on toned 9” x 12” paper.

The original is for sale here!

Thanks! I am glad people are still finding him cute. I went for a deliberate ugly-cute, but didn't expect many people to pick up on the later, haha.

The overall drawing is well done, the creature design is not bad. The head is especially nice...feels like he needs wings, but that is just me.

Thanks for the comment! I maybe put wings on more things than I need to, so I wanted to do something a little more earthbound/water-going for once, haha. I hope to do more variations of these sort of beasties though!

Creature is nice, i love the scale detailing that makes it distinctly fish-like as opposed to reptilian scales. The swerve of the neck is nice and gives the image some flow despite a fairly static pose. The minor details such as the skin folds on the base of the tail go a long way towards making it more realistic/conveying its weight imo overall very nice design!

As far as critiques go what I have to say is minor fixes. I would make the tail where it slips behind the neck/shoulders slightly lower/more curved to better match up with the rest of the tail and so it doesn't form a tangent with the trapezius muscle. Basically I would just erase the upper edge of it. I also feel like the shoulders are cut a bit short; like they combine features of a human orientation with that of a standard quadruped but that could be part of the design as it does give it this squat, awkward appearance which suits a "fish out of water" creature.

Thank you so much for the detailed comment, I appreciate it! <3

I agree about the tangent. It was too late when I realized how I had aligned things! Good insight on the muscular mismatch, too. I did some studies of dogs just to learn some more details of quadruped anatomy as concerns the front limbs and the chest area, but ref for the back is harder to find! I'll continue looking, though, to try and resolve that.
