Mischief Test Scribble by Caelan

Mischief Test Scribble

Caelan

I did a trial of the art program Mischief last summer and it was interesting, but the lack of ability to free transform selections was a huge hindrance to my digital sketching workflow.

Well, not too long ago they released an update that addressed this, and gave everyone fresh trial periods. So I decided to give it another try.

I still have so many mixed feelings! Like, there is a certain creaminess to one of the brushes that is /really nice/, but the brush settings are very limited. You can only control width and capacity- not taper, or grain, or shape… not outside of their presets anyway. Only size and opacity. I’m a sucker for rectangular brushes so this feels weird to me, but the results here are pretty decent? Though I still long for a taper/minimum diameter setting. Oh, and the range at which it senses lightness of pressure and whether or not to make a mark, is slightly skippy at the softest pressure range. Some of my lines in sketching ended in gaps when it felt like normally it wouldn’t, which trips me up somewhat.

Gonna play around with this some more later in the week and see what I think. Like, I’m gonna keep an eye on this program as it develops, but… I don’t feel like it’s worth my buying a license just yet. For me personally anyway. I LOVE the premise of a true non-raster painting program and I think they’ll get somewhere great with it, but it’s a little blocky in my personal utilization preferences just yet.
