Black Horse Fly by BouncyBat

Black Horse Fly

BouncyBat

tabanus atratus

Last summer I watched this lady land on my grill cover, probably finding a nice place to camouflage while she took a nap. An easy way to tell she is female is because of the space between her eyes, with males, the eyes touch at the top of their heads.

    I thought I was gonna be grossed out by this, but. I'm so fascinated. The detail you captured in its wings is amazing. o.o

      Ah, thank you! I'm trying to work my way up to photographing some spiders. I've had arachnophobia since I was little, which I am getting better with. I can at least capture them via deli-cup and paper to release them back outside. They are just a little too unpredictable for my comfort.

        I LOVE spiders. My dad's basement was filled with them. Cobwebs from ceiling to floor (no joke). I set up my little 'work station' down there and got to see them make webs for their egg sacs and how they developed. After watching all of that happen, what fear I had of them became extremely minimal. If anything they annoyed me if they fell on my stuff or I found one on my computer keyboard. :P

    I love your bug pictures. They make me so happy. I'm not too keen on flies, but seeing them up close like this is better. Though horseflies are really loud and scare me with their buzzing XD

      Not to mention these guys can and will bite the ever loving shit out of you. When I took this my arms were stretched waayyyy out and I was trying to stand as far away as possible XD I can't wait until the spring when the bugs come back so I can start taking pictures again! ;w;

    Wow your camera is amazing! It's really cool to see a fly in such detail, they are pretty little creatures up close!

      Ah thank you! For this one I used just a little Nikon Collpix s210...but we did get a newer Canon powershot A2500 that I can't wait to try out this spring!

        Sounds like I need to get my hands on a Nikon. I need a good camera, but I don't want to buy one and then it's a piece, especially since I'm on a budget. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more pics!
