Of all the characters in the story, this leopardess - Jowana - is the only one who managed to retain her original name through the half a dozen rewrites of the tale. The initial reason was my personal attachment to the character (she's one of the few characters who will be featured in subsequent stories, and becomes involved with the character who is supposed to be my future self), but as the story and character evolved, the reason became more elaborate.

By the end of the second story, The Last Whale, she will have acquired a new name - Yavanna. And just so I don't ever forget this, the person who gave me this idea originally was no other than autumnsunrise, back in 2003.
