Beyond the Shrine by Badjoojoo

Beyond the Shrine

Badjoojoo

The shrine background is done :3 ! Had a lot of fun applying and learning a more limited palette and using a strong brush. This gives the final image a sharper feel over all. I think I may have started on the way to consolidating my background studies with lineart images :D ~

I hope to get better and faster at this to start pumping out some more assets for the game. [http://www.alrothia.org]

Bonus: Here's an aniamted gif of the image from layout sketch to final form.

this is so lovely! also, thank you for posting the gif! i see you did the flatting technique! amazing job!

Thank you and you are most welcome ' w' !!! I was glad I assembled the process gif incase anyone would be interested. Yeah, flatting is incredibly useful and a time saver since I can lock layers when doing shading and effects :3

have you tried doing all your flatting on one layer and coloring on another? since the less layers you have, the smaller the file size! though i usually just use one flat layer and then put clipping masks on top of it like everyone else lol.

Most of the time I separate layers based upon field of depth incase I ever want to apply specific effects to various areas [also useful to exporting to things like flash etc.]. Shading is then done on a new layer [folders galore!!!]. For this piece though I actually applied the colours directly to flat layer as an experiment. I don't use clipping masks very often [they are very useful though :D] and instead really on lazy select tools based upon the locked layers. Clipping masks are a better idea overall though since they allow for edge tweaking.

Yeah, clipping masks definitely help me stay a bit more organized. My main goal, though, is to have a few layers as possible. The less layers, the better, haha!

Oh wow! I love pictures that really give an atmosphere, and this picture does that! The density of the forest, the tranquility and the history of the shrine, it's even a little intimidating. Good stuff!

Thank you for that :D ! I am really glad the image communicates a slight intimidating feel and/or wearinss in regards to the shrine. It is still maintained [but by whom >;3 ?] despite being almost swallowed by the forest.
