[WIP] The Heiress (Speedpaint help?) by Avesy (critique requested)

[WIP] The Heiress (Speedpaint help?) (critique requested)

Avesy

Ooof hate to post something so unfinished (perhaps i'll update the file when i do finish it?) but i ran into a wall doing this and was curious if anyone could help? it's mostly to do with the fact it doesn't "read" at a distance/when small.
i need to punch in the darks/contrast on the face but i'm a bit confused as to how.. and where. this is one of my first attempts at speedpainting and one of my only attempts at this level of semi-realism for this species of mine so it is difficult.
(and obviously the shoulders are unfinished but i'm mostly concerned with the face right now)

Written and visual feedback (doesn't have to be over my image, can be showing me a ref) would both be very appreciated <3

lil bust of my character Darya who has sorely been needing a decent picture of herself for a while now

Wow, she's pretty! She looks really good, and you're off to a great start! While I'm not much for speed painting, I might be able to give you a little bit of a direction.

I think the thing that's bugging you is the lack of contrast on the details. You're going to want to slightly darken areas that are farther away from the viewer... like where her ears are behind her shoulders, behind the feathers on her head, the right side of her face (like behind her beak) and things like that. And lighten areas closer to the viewer, like on her beak tip, head and shoulders. I hope this makes sense... I can't really draw anything up at the moment to better describe. :/

Another thing you could try is doing another speedpaint, but this time, give yourself a light source and focus on contrast... this might help in future projects.

OH and one more thing... you can also do a 'contrast test' of your painting... while painting it, turn it into a greyscale image. This will help point out problem areas/low contrasting areas, because everything will just be grey... and then undo the greyscale and continue painting. It'll show you where you need to darken or lighten your details.

I hope this helps, and like I said, you did really well already! :)

Ahh thanks so much I really appreciate all this feedback and all the specific things you said, it's really helpful (for me at least) to get a second pair of eyes on an image so thanks for taking the time to type all that up!

&Yeah that's what I am trying to go back over and do. I made a second layer over it so I can freely punch in darks and erase them/fade them quickly if they're too much without messing with the underpainting and that seems to be helping. I'll work on lightning up some areas close to the viewer too~

I didn't want to resort to grayscale because this was practice for my first painting class (taking it this fall) but I figure I might as well now since this is starting to leave the realm of a speed paint for me lol so thanks for the tip!
If only I could make the navigator display it in grayscale while painting in color that would be so perfect.

Aaand I'm definitely deciding on a light source more upfront nice time to avoid this haha

(My main problem honestly was dealing with her coloration. The character has dyed feathers because she is royalty. In nature there's no birds (at least not ones I can think of) that have pigment-based purple coloration, all purples are structural like the iridescent colors on peacock tail feathers so there's little references for her unless I adjusted the hue in photoshop.. but I think I'm figuring it out c:)
