Sparx on Guard by Aubrin

Sparx on Guard

Aubrin

The dungeon had been an incredible trial for the party. Embattled at every turn by creatures both mystic and mundane, but all vicious and deadly, they had fought their way into the bowels of the necromancer's underground fortress, with naught but the howl of battle, crackle of mystic lightning, and the bones of their foes scattered in their wake. They had cut a dire track through the magus' traps and minions, all the while knowing that, no matter how well they may do against the mad mage's tricks and minions, they stood nary a chance against the raw arcane might of their foe, should the battle come to blows face to face.

They had, however, come prepared. The Lathanderian priest had been gifted holy relics from her church to conduct a hallowed ritual, rites to strip the necromancer of his pact with death long enough for a mortal blow to be struck, and his soul sundered in such a way that he might never return to menace the living. Alas, such ritual was a long-winded affair, and required the steady attention of even the slightest magically inclined members of the party.

Thus, it fell to Sparx to hold fast the doorway to the chamber in which the party had sequestered themselves, the mighty dragonborn warrior swearing to allow passage to none, be they living or dead, until the ritual had been completed. Thus, he stepped into the hallway, demanding the door behind him be sealed until such time as the ritual had been completed. There, he planted himself, vowing to hold his ground and protect his charges, come whatever may.

Already, in the shadows at the end of the hallway, he could hear the rattle of bone on steel, rotted flesh shambling forward, and the foul stench of ghoul and ghast creeping into his nostrils. He remained stoic. This battle would bring itself to him.
