Big, Bitter Tears

Awww, SADNESS!! This is an illustration for a short book I wrote and illustrated last year (2015) for my senior thesis project. It is called "The Shirt" and it follows one of my characters, Dempsey Carter, and his obsession with a shirt he found at a yard sale. However, his mom hates it and won't let him leave the house in it. The book itself is prose and I drew 12 illustrations to go with the text. I made copies of the book and sold a bunch of copies at the year-end art show. The main problem with the book is that everyone thought it was going to be a comic due to my cartoony style, but they ended up getting a prose novella. I would've liked to have drawn a comic, but I didn't have time to make one because I really had to pile on the credit hours to be able to graduate. I'm still glad I wrote the book, though. I'll be posting the illustrations I'm most proud of.

This particular illustration is from a scene in which Dempsey got roughed up pretty badly at school and is being comforted by his best friend/boyfriend, Rhodes. I'm pretty sure that this was the first time I'd ever drawn a detailed depiction of a crying character. I remember debating whether or not I should draw snot dribbling out of Dempsey's nostril, then giggling as I penciled it in.

I used markers and India ink for this. 2015.
