Gerard the Giraffe (critique requested)

I just drew this up for the fun of it. My pal Buck wanted me to draw a giraffe.

Not sure what you were looking for in terms of critique, but just wanted to drop a quick comment that I think this is a cute piece and that I like the quality of the lines you used.

Mostly in the lines and colors. X3 I'm glad that you think that about the lines. I've really been trying to improve on my line work.

Yes, the variation in the line weight is nice, particularly around the back of the jaw and the front of the neck. I think the colors got a little muddled during scanning or photographing, since the paper is pretty gray. That makes it a bit hard to comment on the colors, but from what I can see you might have wanted to use a different color for the mane. It's more of a brown at the top of the head, but looks to be the same more orange color as the main body down behind the neck. Changing the color or adding in more lines to indicate the longer hair would help separate those two parts of the body. For subtler line work, next time you might try moving the pencil in the same direction the hair would be going, which is slower but would layer the marks differently from the body and therefore change the way the coloring looks.

Thank you for the advice! I will definitely give this a shot next time I color something with hair. For now it will go in my art advice journal. X3

I wish I had a scanner, this was done using my phone. I can pro ably add a different brown and maybe get some difference in the mane because I did in fact use the same color as the body as the ref I used for colors has the same colors so I went for it. I'll definitely not do that next time. As I agree a little color difference would probably look better!

Have you tried blending your colors yet? Colored pencils (and please do correct me if my guess on materials is wrong) are pretty good at blending just by layering so long as your not pressing down super hard and really trying to get a fully solid color out of them, so lightly working over the top of your base color may give you the effect you're looking for as well as add more depth to the coloring.

I do that, but to be honest I tend to worry about over doing it and ruining it so I tend to be hesitant on using many colors. X3

The mane is actually two colors but I just realized the picture ruined it and you can't really see. I used a dark brown where it meets the neck but it barely shows in this picture. >_> I really need to get a new scanner.

Totally understandable! Starting slow is a great way to do it, to give yourself more time to experiment and get comfortable with the materials. Random practice scribbles can be best for experimentation, since they don't need to look like anything but serve more like testing out a new color to see if you actually want to use it or not on a nicer piece that you've invested more time and energy into and are therefore more attached to.

I've been wanting to start doing something like that. Just so I don't have to worry so much over it. I've been trying to get into the habit of drawing something at least once a day, I could totally start coloring them here and there.

You've been wonderfully helpful, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you. I appreciate your time. :3

Drawing often is, hands down, the best way to get better. There's a lot of theory in art, but there are also millions of ways to do it right. Sometimes there's wrong, but a lot more often it's 'well, that's not what I /wanted/ to do', and sometimes that ends up being good too, in an unexpected way. I find that it's easier to try new things separately or on a piece that was already not up to personal standards; it needs to be incorporated with full effort at some point or else it will never get beyond the experimental stage, but practice before hand never hurts.

Not at all, you asked for critique and you've been great with providing more info I can work with. I try to take a look at the critique wanted list at lest a few times a week, but if you want feel free to give me a poke; I haven't yet found a section that lists all the requests, just the small randomized list on the front page.

I completely agree with you. Very well said! <3

And there isn't a page for it sadly. Just that short list, if you really want to go for it go to the WZL Critique Twitter page, I think everything listed as needing critique is posted there.
