Otter Ref by Asrael

Otter Ref

Asrael

The ref for my new ottersona! Thanks so much to :icontheburningfox: (@TheBurninFox on Twitter) for drawing and designing it, and :icontehweenus: for tips on design and hair.

He's an Irish river otter with some kind of trickster-fae-blooded ancestry, living in a modern world. If you've seen my jackram character then this basic idea isn't new, but, instead of being huge and obviously different, the otter is much more suited to fitting in while still having supernatural elements to him.

He has a very easy time influencing people and likes to use that to play little tricks on them. His fae nature shows itself more obviously on his body when he's angry, excited, or using his abilities to influence people. At first his eyes and hair will glimmer a little, only enough that most people would probably dismiss it as a trick of the light. As he gets more excited or pushes his influence harder, his hair begins to look more like flame in how it flows and flickers, while his irises glow. If he's really pushing his compulsions or wanting to make them more permanent, his pawpads and tattoos may glow golden, enabling him to send his tattoos onto someone to act as an anchor for his energy.

His abilities can also be something of a burden to him, since if he doesn't control himself well enough his can end up showing his glowy-flamey fae nature to those nearby. Even when he's not trying, he can end up influencing people, so he wears tinted glasses to dampen the effect of his eyes. It's not a perfect solution, and he's had to do some damage control occasionally.

In the default setting I imagine for him, four-armed and supernatural people are not common, so he tries to fit in and keep his nature to himself whenever he's not in a more accepting environment. He doesn't want expensive custom clothing, so he has to do something himself to get something that fits his arms. Wearing just jackets and coats makes this a little easier because many of them have seams that go down under their arms. That means he can buy two jackets and sew the sleeves from one onto the other with minimal sewing skill and time. Most jackets also fit looser than shirts, making it easier for him to tuck his lower arms underneath his uppers if he doesn't want them to be seen.
