Several years later, Vershaft has gone and finished schooling and gotten himself a commissioned position as a systems officer on The Cause, an out-of-date freelance carrier ship with missile-frigate capacity. Despite being offered other jobs, he's stuck with the Cause so far, because he's done so much work on the ship he considers it his home...and the crew, his family. Holding the official rank of Lieutenant on board, he's one of the senior bridge officers and responsible for the upkeep of all computers on board.

Here he is at his station, reporting on incoming enemy vessels. Launch all fighters! Red alert!
