Ross has trained hard his whole life to try and become a Pokémon champion. He embedded his grandmother's earring into his right armband and now calls it the "Fist of the Ancestors"
He hopes to bring honor and glory to the family name.

I see him as being a bit of an alternate version of Rose vs being a male form of her. So who knows if Rose and Ross would somehow meet in some tear in the dimensional fabric.
