Custom G3 Unicorn Cheerilee

AnScathMarcach

So back when G3 was still around, during the Runaway Rainbow phase, I wanted all four of the unicorns. Sadly, I could never find Cheerilee and I never knew why. That is until recently, when I tried to look for her again and discovered she was ONLY released as a Styling Pony! So that gave me the idea to use her to make my very first rehaired custom!

Yes, this is my VERY FIRST rehaired MLP custom!
(My first ever custom was this Princess Luna Custom which I now realize is a HORRIBLE picture. Wtf did I use to take that? A webcam?)

Her bait was a Whistle Wishes I ordered off of Ebay. There were several reasons I picked Whistle Wishes.
1. Rarity and Brights Brightly are both in the same pose, so it only makes sense that Cheerilee and Whistle Wishes would be in the same pose.
2. Whistle Wishes has green eyes (even though they're purple in the movie) and Cheerilee's eyes are canonically green. That way I wouldn't have to repaint them and worry about them ending up looking sloppy.
3. I already have a Whistle Wishes. If I picked a pony I didn't already have, then I wouldn't want to customize it!
4. And finally, because she was the cheapest unicorn I could find.

I used Acrylic paints to paint her. Her body color was a mix of Apple Barrel "Lavender Sachet" and Americana "Lavender". For her cutie mark, the outlines were made of a mix of "Baby Pink" with a little bit of "Santa Red" and a teeny drop of "Lavender" (all Americana). The flower color is solid "Baby Pink", the centers are "Cadmium Yellow", and the leaves and the hoof heart are "Snow (Titanium) White" mixed with a little bit of Delta Ceramcoat "Jubilee Green". I used a blue/yellow iridescence ultrafine glitter. Everything was sealed with DuraClear Satin varnish.

For the hair, I got "Pussycat" from Dollyhair.com. And let me tell you, my first rehairing was a JOURNEY. I didn't feel like spending $15 on a rehairing tool, so I thought I'd just buy the needle, and I had a plan to make my own handle for it out of Sculpey. It actually worked great. However, I was about 1/4th of the way done when I realized that with each time I shoved in a new lock of hair, the needle was sinking deeper and deeper into the handle I made. So I pulled it out, and attached it to another tool I have that works very similarly to the rehairing tool. Of course this tool isn't made to hold a needle, so it eventually broke. I think my main problem was that the needle I ordered was too big. It said on the site that "Size 8 is good for barbies" so I compared the roots on a barbie to my ponies, and the ponies were slightly bigger, so I went a size up.
Well, after that needle broke, I decided to try to make my own. It is just a sewing needle with the end of the eye cut off after all. That worked great for another good ways, but that eventually broke too. I went to the store to get some more, but the more I tried, the faster they broke. I was about to give up when I started looking up alternative methods and found this: The Floss Method. This worked perfectly (even though it took MUCH longer than a tool would) and that's how I FINALLY finished it.

And last but not least, I regret to inform you that her head cannot turn. When I first got the Whistle Wishes and pulled her head off, the neck joint (which is supposed to be all one piece with the head) broke off from the head. This was actually great because it left me a LOT more space to clean out and rehair, and I could just superglue it back on. Well... that would have worked out great except I COULDN'T GET THE DARN THING TO GO BACK IN!!! I tried everything to shove it back in there, but it just wouldn't go. (yeah yeah "that's what she said" ahaha...) So my only option was to take it back off again and just glue the head onto the body.

Well, there you have it. A custom Unicorn Cheerilee.

And now my collection is finally complete.

If you want to see pictures of my process, you can see them in this folder of my Sta.sh on DeviantArt.
