(Species Reference) Katapnisaurus

Amby

It took me a while to put together the info and settle for differences and stuff, but here it is, a reference of my species! The Katapnisaurus! Nice to meet you.

(this may or may not imply that I'll draw others of my kind in the future)

Here's the description.

The Katapnisaurus

Etymology

The name "Katapnisaurus" (plural "Katapnisauri") comes from the Greek Katapnigo (καταπνίγω), which means to ‘restrain’ and the Greek Saurus (σαῦρος), which means ‘lizard’.

Biology

Appearance

The Katapnisaurus was a medium to small-sized dinosaur with overall solid opaque sepia coloring on their feathers and most of their skin and scales; their tails, eyes and tethers had bright Red, Blue or Yellow colors.

Their entire body had a smooth, innocuous surface which strongly repelled static, fluids and dust.

Katapnisauri had a very hard skull and they could extend their flight feathers on their arms and legs but they would do this mostly to glide. They were poor fliers.

This species had two extendable and retractable strong prehensile vine-like appendages that grew on their backs, which they called "tethers"; these were used to reach far away objects and hunt. They reached their full length after sexual maturity.

The Katapnisauri had a "third eye" on their forehead, which is actually a developed horn that had a stronger hypnotic effect than that of their actual eyes. This third eye is fake, thus it doesn't blink but the way it's designed, it seems to look in the same direction the actual eyes are looking. Pressing it caused the frills to expand by reflex.

As a species, they were social creatures that lived close to their own kind in huge groups regardless of their main (Red, Blue or Yellow) banded colors. It is theorized that they coexisted with other animals through the use of hypnosis.

Frills

They had a frill of scales around their neck, which could extend and fold back; when flared, the frills had a shape and pattern similar to an eye, which could change colors in various ways to stun, intimidate or forcibly hypnotize other creatures that stared into them. Not two Katapnisauri had the same frill patterns. Each one could not be affected by its own frill effect.

It is unknown if they used them for mating purposes.

Venom

The Katapnisaurus had venom glands connected to their fangs, spurs and tether ends. When injected or consumed, this venom behaved like a psycho active drug on small doses; could cause hallucinations, headaches and fainting as the dose raised, and if enough venom was administered, it could prove fatal.

As a species, the Katapnisauri were immune to their venom.

Hypnosis

The Katapnisaurus had naturally adapted to develop ways to trick and influence other creatures through visual contact with their eyes, frill patterns and tether movements. They used their hypnosis for a variety of purposes; among other things, they would use it to hunt as well as to manipulate larger creatures that could mean a threat to them.

Sexual Dimorphism

Male Katapnisauri were generally larger and stronger than female; they had a cape of downy feathers on their back and some of their feathers could grow on their face like facial hair. Female Katapnisauri had no cape but had two downy pouches on both sides of their waist, which they would use to carry small objects and make warm nests for their eggs and young.
