According to various tales, the vapour phoenix is said to have been created in Myr's second trial of new life, after she attempted, and failed, to remedy the wasting of magic by dragons with the creation of the faeries.

She created the vapour phoenix alongside its stone-bodied brothers and sisters to absorb and replenish settled magic through their bodies: the snowshoe ram, the marbison, the precious crab, and many others. But only the phoenix succeeded, renewing the air and clearing the dreary sky of clouds, its misty skeleton invulnerable to death. The failure of its siblings prompted the final trial, the creation of the Ounten, to consume the rest, the earthly substances and precious minerals that the vapour phoenix could not reach or swallow.

Rainbows after a heavy storm are said to be the light illuminating the vapour phoenix's misty plumage, as eager flocks consume the remains of frowning thunderheads.
