A Hero's Journy: Through the vaccume cleaner and back by Amarune (critique requested)

The Creation Myth

In the beginning there are humans, animals, and dirt. When humans drop various things they end up in a magical land called the floor. This land is so magical that it is right under our very own feet. Everything that exists on the floor wonders about the huge object that can suck them away, they dread the very day that they will have to come face to face with the beast, otherwise known as the vacuum. This beast is so strong that it can suck them away from their home never to be returned.

In this magical land there is a gummy bear, he doesn't have many friends because he is always cranky, he is mad because he wants to be a care bear and he was only a gummy. One day gummy bear was taking a walk along the floor and he saw something wiggling inside of a shoe. As he walked over he noticed that it was a small plastic looking man. "HEY! What are you doing in there" he said. In a few seconds the man jumped out of the shoe and said, "Is he gone!?", "Is who gone,"? said the gummy bear. "That little human like creature, it keeps trying to put me in its mouth and finally I got away." The little man was trying to escape from one of the children in the house, after talking for a while the gummy and the little man became friends. They started to hang out together and went on adventures through the floor land.

One day the two friends find another strange creature. Lurking underneath one of the dressers is a little bunny. This is no ordinary bunny because this bunny is made of dust! The dust bunny is too scared to come out, so the two friends ran underneath and push him all the way out into the light of the floor world. "Wow, there is so much I have never seen before" said the bunny. This dust bunny is very little and spends most of his life under the dresser being too scared to come out. The bunny, the bear, and the man become best friends through the days and started to trust each other.

The Trickster Myth

High above the floor there was a shelf of books, and on this shelf of books there was a stuffed Gargoyle toy that was very jealous of the other toys that lived on the floor and got to be played with. One day when a human was dusting the shelf of books the gargoyle toy was knocked off the shelf and decided to take advantage of the opportunity he'd been given. Setting off across the floor he came to a place he'd heard referred to as 'Under the bed', a place he'd often seen the toys he was jealous of go to hide from the little humans.

Upon reaching the place under the bed he met with the gummy bear and his friends, the Lego guy and the dust bunny. Putting the friendliest expression he could on his face he approached them "Hello dear friends, you look like brave heroes. Would you be interested in claiming a treasure?" The gummy bear turned to look at him with suspicion while the gentle but shy dust bunny approached him with caution. "What sort of treasure is it?" asked the Lego man as he stepped forwards.

"Oh it's a wonderful treasure called a penny, it makes you invisible to that beast that sucks us up" answered the gargoyle toy. "You won't have to worry about being sucked away anymore if you help me find it." The gummy bear looked at the gargoyle and pulled the Lego man and bunny aside to discuss whether or not to help him, and after a couple of minutes of debate it was voted that any treasure that could help them against the beast would be worth whatever they had to do.

Turning back to the Gargoyle the Lego man asked "Where can we find this treasure?" to which the Gargoyle replied "If you follow the trail of cookie crumbs to the open floor space and wait for the beast to come the treasure will appear. You must claim the penny as it approaches and not a moment sooner or you'll fall through the cracks in the floor and be lost between the worlds for all time." With this knowledge the three friends set off on their quest, unaware that the gargoyle was laughing at them, for they had fallen for his trick and would surely meet their end at the hands of the beast, or fall beneath the floor boards, never to be seen again.

The Apocalypse myth

The three friends begin their journey, following the cookie crumbs. They travel for what seems like days and things grow louder and louder around them. They are close to giving up when dust bunny yells. "What's wrong?" asks the Lego man. The dust bunny replies with, "There is a shiny object right over there! Could that be the penny?" Gummy bear squints his eyes and says, "All I can see is that bright light." "Right before that!" exclaims the dust bunny. Lego man agrees that he sees something so they move closer.

As the three adventure closer they feel the ground shaking and begin to question what they are doing. The dust bunny pushes them forward talking about how amazing this thing called a penny must be. It becomes very windy and they seem to be pulled forward and they do not quite understand why. With all these unanswered questions gummy bear gets nervous. "Guys, are you sure this is a good idea?" questions gummy bear. "Oh gummy bear, we will be okay," says Lego man.

All of a sudden things got worse. The ground was shaking so bad they could hardly stand and the wind was pulling all three friends and before they knew it, dust bunny was gone! Gummy bear began to panic and Lego man tried to keep him calm as they push to get the penny saying it must be where dust bunny went. The two linked hands and just as Lego man was about to touch the penny, the two were sucked up into the vacuum.

They were spinning and screaming with no idea what was going on. Gummy bear screams, "This is the end. It all comes down to this. Good-bye Lego!" The spinning continues but then comes to a sudden stop and everything falls. Complete silence. Then a faint, "Help." It was dust bunny! Lego man brushed his knees off and went running for dust bunny pulling gummy bear with him. Once the three friends reunite they make a pact to stick together no matter what this new, strange world may hold for them.

The Hero Myth

Once in this strange new world Lego man looks to his friends, and realizes how lucky they truly are to have found each other. (flashback) When he first awoke from the nightmarish wind he began to search for his friends. Dust Bunny was all torn apart and he reminded him of the scarecrow from Wizard of Oz, a little of me here a little of me there. Lego man was able to help put him back together. They went on search of Gummy Bear. They walked through miles and miles of dust and debris finally they saw red, yet it didn't appear to be their friend. Upon closer inspection they realized it was indeed Gummy he suddenly had all the hair of a care bear like he always wanted. This time they realize they must find a way out of this nightmare. So they start walking for what felt like hours. They finally start to notice they are moving in circles only to pass the same dust piles over and over again. Lego man says, "we must be going about this all wrong we travel for hours yet get nowhere." Gummy retorts back, "I have hair, I have hair, I'm so happy. I even have the picture of Dust Bunny on my belly just like a real care bear." Dust Bunny states, " I agree Lego man but where should we go, since we are going in circles?" Lego man realizes that the Gargoyle had stated, "find the penny," and so they began the search for the lost penny. The terrain was treacherous, with dust clouds everywhere. Dust Bunny is constantly sneezing, yet they continue on their journey to find the outside. Then something happens, they hear this horrible noise and the winds pick up and all of a sudden, they are swirling and swirling holding onto each other, so as not to be separated. When the wind stops and they land once again, Lego man figures how they can escape. He tells his friends, "we must find the penny." They begin searching for the elusive penny. Until the inevitable happens, Gummy Bear steps into something wet, he becomes stuck as if he had walked into wet cement. Lego man pulls and pulls to rescue his friend, while he tells Dust Bunny to stay away, lest he fall prey to the wetness also. He uses all of his strength and is finally able to pull his friend free. They see a light coming from the sky and realize that maybe this is the way out; they climb up the piles of debris, and every time they get an inch, they fall two inches. They realize they must come up with a plan. So they seek out the penny once more. They amazingly find the penny, due to the light shining in the vacuum. To their amazement the penny speaks to them, "Why would you want to get out? Only to be put in the young ones mouths once again." The friends look to each other and all reply at once, "Freedom." The penny states, "well for all of you to find your way out you must find the door." The friends look at each other and say, "Door, what door?" The penny is silent never to speak ever again. They search for this magical door. They wade through the debris and realize it can't be on top or they would have seen it already so it must be on the bottom. They root through all of dust and dirt once more to find the magical door that will release them. Dust Bunny being made of dust, finds the door first and they run to it only to find it's locked. Luckily, they took the penny with them, and are able to put the penny in the tiny opening and push it open. To their amazement they are able to walk into the world whence they came from.

The after life

As the three friends exited the vacuum back into the world from which they had been taken they felt scared. They did not know the destruction that the vacuum had brought to their home under the bed, and they were all worried about creating a plan to prevent a repeat of this tragedy. Now that they were armed with the knowledge of the vacuum and the magical powers of the penny they knew that they were obligated to bring this knowledge back to their friends. The three discovered that the vacuum had taken them inside the closet. "I have been here before." Said the dust bunny, " all we need to do is walk under the door, turn left and our home will be inside of the third room from the left.".

After a long walk they returned to their home and found it relatively unscathed, the contents were scattered all about and far cleaner but it had not been destroyed. Unfortunately all of the dust had been taken away and the dust bunny had lost all of his friends. He vowed to restore the dust community to its former glory. For the Lego Man and the Gummy Bear they rejoiced with the people from under the bed. The gargoyle was not allowed back into the community; he was forced out of the room and never allowed to know the true properties of the penny.

The Lego Man climbed on top of a nearby shoe box, and held up the penny for all to see. He explained the scary depths of the inside of the vacuum and how the magical properties of the penny brought them back. The people hailed the three heroes and dedicated a festival in their honor. The three lived the rest of their lives by building preventative systems in the community, while never forgetting what they had gone through to learn this knowledge.

Amarune

OK, so this it the results of the final project I had to do for my Mythology class last spring. It's the story of A gummy bear, a Lego man, and a dust bunny, and their journey through the vacuum cleaner.

It's made up of 5 different mythology parts, but turned out more like a children's story than an actual set of myths:

*The creation myth

*The trickster myth

*The apocalypse myth

*The Hero myth

*The afterlife myth

~Gummy bear and Lego man copyright to their rightful owners.

~Story copyright to me. I spent a week writing and presenting it for my class, which was both fun and not so fun at the same time.
