False Widow I.D. by Amagire

False Widow I.D.

Amagire

I see a lot of black widow spider illustrations, especially tattoos (but occasionally identification guides), with the red "hourglass" marking on the wrong side of the spider. I have a theory that these are false widows (Steatoda grossa) trying to get into widow bars.

For some reason this makes me sad and I feel really bad for them. Maybe that's because S. grossa are one of my favorite spiders and I already call them emo spiders.

Don't worry, there's a follow-up to this I'm working on where Steatoda finds solidarity and support among Castieneira descripta, Phidippus johnsoni, Leucauge venusta, and all the other dark-colored spiders with some kind of red/orange marking on them somewhere who are constantly mistaken for THE DEADLY BLACK WIDOW (tm).

Huzzah, they should start a band.
