Aurora the Dragonbear by Akysi

Aurora the Dragonbear

Akysi

“Oh dear, are you lost? Don’t worry little one, I will shield you from the cold until we find your way home.”

Another piece that I had in near-completion at the end of last year, but spent too much time staring at it before I decided it was done. xD As of some time this year, this character will be a decade old, wow!

Like with a lot of my old OCs and their origins, I didn’t know what to do with her for a while, but doing this revamp really endeared myself to her concept as a benevolent guide through the vast tundra she calls home. I think it speaks to the evolution of my design sensibilities in that I can take ideas from my baby designer days or earlier and actually turn them into legitimate concepts and character designs that fit with the things I create nowadays. It feels a bit like going back for an old friend you haven’t seen in ages and walking with them for a while to catch up, and then introducing them to your current friend group. Fun stuff :)

An interesting idea and a wonderful design 🧡 She looks very caring :3
I too played around with the idea of a dragon/polar bear mix, but couldn't quite get it to look right.
Aurora is definitely an example of the hybrid done well ^^ Happy (possibly early) 10th to her!

Aww thanks so much! :'D ❤️ And yeah I agree, it's a hard balance to strike for combining the features of both animals, though it largely depends on how much of each animal you want in the design as well. In Aurora's case, she's far more on the side of polar bear for her general anatomy, but with enough dragon features integrated to tip the scales back a bit. That said, I drew many variations of her concept back in the day, all of which struggled to balance the two properly, so I'm glad I finally found a happy medium here. Nice to know I've improved in the last decade, haha!

Is there any chance that we're going to see more of her in the future? ^^; I can imagine with colors/details like that it would make things harder to replicate, but seeing her in different poses and such would be really cool :3 Just a reminder to use a high bridge snout to get that polar bear look, too often I see people use a "White Grizzly" (or Spirit Bear as they're called) muzzle and it always looks off x3

Most likely, yes! Not sure when really, but I do a lot of character design stuff like poses, expression sheets and rotations, so I'm sure I'll draw her again sometime in the future :)
