This is about Setsubun no hi/節分の日(what Japanese so call), is the beginning of Haru/spring. People of Japan would have a few special event for this day. I am experience some myself. So .. they have this long sushi looking, called eho-maki which basically non-cut sushi. You must eat it till the end without cutting. It's said to be bring fortune I guess. (because it's thick!)
Also, household and shrine has a event called Onitaichi(which is Oni extermination) Oni(鬼) is that red ogre monster if u don't know. The parents will use a oni mask and scared the kids, the kids must throw them with the beans as an extermination act.(because Oni hates beans.)
