Felix the Chimerical Dragon by Abbi Normal

Felix the Chimerical Dragon

Abbi Normal

Chimerical Dragons are a strange creature, whose biology is not well understood. People say the gods make them one at a time, instead of using a mold like they do for other creatures, just putting them together with whatever spare parts are left laying around the workshop from minting fresh batches of other animals. The Ministry of Supernatural Resources has done little to investigate the matter, since there's no need to press the issue, as Chimerical Dragons are generally very small and good natured, and overall good citizens, friendly neighbors, and make valued members of their community. What research they have done suggests that the bizarre and unique combinations of features found in Chimerical Dragons is caused by the divergent nature of their DNA: first, it is a triple helix. Second, instead of the T/A C/G sets, they basically run through the whole alphabet, and in some sub-species, start on numbers. And all of those can make coherent sets with each other. The dominance of one trait over another is more or less a mystery, and since every individual Dragon's genome contains unguessable amounts of unexpressed recessive traits, children can frequently display traits that haven't been outwardly seen in the family for years, centuries, or even millennia.

Felix here lives in Toronto, relying on the Universal Cloaking Phenomenon and his illusion magic to hide the fact that he's actually a member of a rare and slightly magical race of tiny and highly diverse dragons. Just like all the werewolves and goblins that roam the streets, humans simply fail to notice he's not also human. He's part dog, goat, and possibly sparrow or something, aside from being a dragon. He frequently has to remind other creatures about the dragon part, who tend to forget this on account of his being so fluffy. He likes eating peanut butter, millet, and tin cans, but his favourite food is quartz (though he knows it's junk food and bad for him). He works at an EB Games, he's a bit of a Nintendo fanboy, and wants you to know that he doesn't care what anyone says, he really loves the newer Pokemon designs.

Felix was made by hand, with a wire and wood skeleton, polymer clay head and feet, mohair, quilt batting, and faux fur and real feathers. The tail and wings are fully flexible, and the spine, hind legs, and shoulders are partially flexible. Considering he's my first big sculpting project, AND my first "real" art doll creature, I'm pretty happy with him! Hence, "Felix". :) (Smile)

Felix the Chimerical Dragon is one of Abbi Normal's "Imaginary Friends" ooak creatures.
