November 9, 1938 - Kristallnacht. While the sounds of terrified screams and smashing windows reverberate through 22-year-old Max Steinmarder's small neighborhood in Stuttgart, Germany, his desperate mother thrusts forged identity papers into his hand and pushes him out the door. He will never see any of his family again, and the survivor's guilt will haunt him for the rest of his life.
