Volunteer: October Creature-Exchange - Keedot

Shadderstag

I'm finally done this. This is actually an October prompt, and five other artists got scared away by it so I volunteered for this back in March and worked on it on and off for the last two months. So this is for Creature Exchange for Keedot.

This was the prompt and it was a helluva challenge, oh man.

1 - What parts of your prompt were written well and easy to understand? Was there anything the writer of the prompt could improve on or include next time they create a prompt?

The whole thing made it very clear what the prompter had in mind, which was a little intimidating once I realized how much work would be going into it, but I pulled it off.

2 - Please explain how you interpreted the prompt to create your design. Which features did you use? Did you stick to the chosen palette or make changes to it? Does the design you created have any special abilities or quirks?

I used the reference images that the prompter provided but did a lot of research of my own on top of that. I knew right away I wanted to do a more Eastern dragon. I was actually at a bit of a loss on what to do until I made the head and torso a lamp and the undersides cages. The very first thing I designed on the dragon was actually the legs though haha. I stuck to the palette as best I could using flat colors on a metallic being. In reality this thing would be more reflective. I basically imagine it as living metal so even if it doesn't look like it should be able to move and bend, it totally can cause ~magic~

You'll probably want to download to see it full size.

    He is GORGEOUS/GLORIOUS!
You nailed down everything I hoped he would be. Glowing, haunting, a dark being that you might find in a creepy place but is much more benevolent than he looks like, since you know, lamps, guiding lights, ect-ect.
This is probably one of the most gorgeous adoptables anyone has ever made for me, definite success~ Pat yourself for me, sir!

I've been watching a lot of character design and cartooning tutorials to help with my comic and they say the hardest thing to do is simplify. The finished result may look simple, but its the process of getting there that is incredible. So much work to be put into it. What works, what doesn't. What to keep and what to leave out.

I'm sort of learning to simplify just by drawing chibis! I want to learn a more cartoony style for sure
