Medieval Manuscript- Early Modern Colophon by Threetails

Medieval Manuscript- Early Modern Colophon

Threetails

Here are some pics of the manuscript I'm working with, a supposedly 13th century (possibly earlier or later) copy of Peter Lombard's Commentary on the Psalms.

The guy who was supposed to get back to me on Thursday with the original set of pics of the manuscript I'm working with finally got back to me, and now I can share them with you much sooner than anticipated!

These photos were taken with a smart phone (not my new camera) which means they aren't quite as good as the camera would have been, but I may still go back to the library at some point and do some high-quality shots.

Here you see the only evidence of an owner before 1870 for this particular manuscript: a colophon (end note) that names the owner as "Ludovici Pinelle, Mgri. Principalis Regalis Collegii Navarre Paris."

A bit of research shows that this is Louis Pinelle, who served a short term as Bishop of Meaux and died in 1516; it's remarkable to think that as long ago as he died, the book was still old when he got it!

Wow, so many questions. I'm assuming that this is parchment.
It looks like there is some faint text and marks below the colophon. Is that bleed through or was something scraped out? Does bleed through occur on parchment? Any chance that this is also a palimpsest?

    So much fun.

Yes, this is vellum, and fairly low-grade vellum at that. In several places ink or paint were visible bleeding through the pages so I'm guessing this is probably the case. It'd be interesting to enhance that image and see what comes through but it looks to be written in the same hand as the rest of the document.

Speaking of the hand it's written in, I now suspect it may be 12th century and not 13th as all the literature about it stated.

Now edited with a better-quality pic of the same page!
