Medieval Manuscript- Illuminated Q by Threetails

Medieval Manuscript- Illuminated Q

Threetails

Here are some pics of the manuscript I'm working with, a supposedly 13th century (possibly earlier or later) copy of Peter Lombard's Commentary on the Psalms.

The guy who was supposed to get back to me on Thursday with the original set of pics of the manuscript I'm working with finally got back to me, and now I can share them with you much sooner than anticipated!

These photos were taken with a smart phone (not my new camera) which means they aren't quite as good as the camera would have been, but I may still go back to the library at some point and do some high-quality shots.

Here we see an illuminated letter "Q." one of several illuminated initials throughout the text. Sadly there were no illustrations, marginalia, or miniatures (and believe me, I looked) but I kind of like the subtle beauty of the piece.

Utterly amazing! The book and the text seem to be in quite a remarkable condition; taking a look as a layman I could guess the book is no more than couple of years old, maybe done as a college bookbinding experiment...

Then again, it reminds me that the technology, cuisine, warfare and customs change, but people seem to be the same.

Well, this was deep into the book. The first few pages were heavily stained by dirty hands and full of worm holes. But you're right, this is definitely in remarkable condition, especially since I now suspect (by the older Carolingian hand it's written in) that this is actually a 12th century book and not 13th as everyone had thought.

Edited with a higher-quality pic of the same page taken today.
