Things have a funny way of working out.

So, after like two years of using the character, finally got around to getting a proper reference sheet. Much as I dearly love TeknicolorTiger's original depiction, the lighting conditions and pose are not the best for the sake of a describing her! She's also, arguably, changed a bit since then. I mean, a little. cough

This is Balina as she stands in Crystala's Dreamcatcher universe, and can be considered as a 'base' template for Balina. Given the entire concept of Balinology, there's no real way to draw her wrong (even non-moofs can be Balinas; I should prove that sometime), but it's useful to have a thing I can point to and go, 'this is a moof'.

These are some true facts about the Balina:

  • Previously primarily bovine, Balina made a trade with her resident Fenrir, who bit off more than Balina could chew. With a large amount of outside assistance, she managed to regain enough of herself to at least be bipedal again, though she tends to turn back into a wolf fairly frequently.
  • Being a moof is super-awkward. Her legs and back don't like standing upright, so her walk is unsteady. Fenrir managed to grab her good hand, and that paw thing is not dextrous. Her face doesn't even feel real; talking is okay, but a bovine muzzle equipped with canine teeth (which don't even fit in there right) is not very conductive to anything other than a particularly toothy grin. She finds her wolf shape thousands of times more comfortable, but at the same time feels guilty about how 'right' it feels.
  • Balina's outfit is modular. When shifting between moof and wolf, the entire thing comes apart in sections, leaving only the belt and backpack on her enlarged frame. Both have attachments on the back that make it easier for anyone (usually Eithne) who end up needing to hitch a ride.
  • As in the picture, Balina's body temperature is roughly that of dry ice. Her thick, shaggy fur makes for a good insulator, but it means she has to groom chunks of ice out from right next to her skin every morning.
  • The claw thing on her paw is known as Handfang. It was a gift to help her cope after losing her original hand.
  • Handfang usually has a casing over it to keep it from cutting things open, which lets it function like an ersatz thumb. It's not perfect, but it beats having a useless paw on that arm.
