Finally, some progress on this creature design!

I think the major factor that will impede the level of fur detail is the sheer computing power needed to have enough fur to make the creature suitably fuzzy. The fur has been made with FiberMesh, in separately masked layers. A lot of work needs to be done, but we're on the right track at least. Practice makes perfect!
