When I went to college I had a class in Journalism, and I helped with the school newspaper. I did a few illustrations here and there and later on they let me have an ENTIRE page to do with whatever I wanted. No one else had this amazing power, but it was also quite a challenge to find things to fill the entire page. I attempted to get other students to contribute comic strips, but although some did, they did so inconsistently and I would have to invent other things to fill up the page, hence how I came do cross word puzzles. I had never ever made them before, and they were mostly another opportunity to show off my art (I loved being able to do that) and here is one of the puzzles I made. The clues are long gone now, but I really like how this one turned out with the winged monster eating the little bean creatures.
