Masks by Crossed-Unversed

There is much in our hearts
that we hide from one another
and the Mask that we show
tears our world asunder.

Many Masks are of hate
to let free cruelty flow
bringing pain and despair
to the places they go.

Others may be quite kind;
do not be deceived
those Masks hide the tyrants
liars and thieves.

I was born Broken
but pretend to be whole
for who would care for beings
that possess damaged souls?

But the Mask reflects the self
and suffice it to say
that my Mask is cracked
and my soul in decay.

I act as if numb
though my world is but pain
established by others
for personal gain.

Broken once and Shattered now
I walk these lonely streets
in darkness dance while shadows chase
memories of past defeat.

I fought to save my innocence
from society and strife
but only served to hasten loss
of purity and life.

A Broken thing can one day heal;
the Shattered ones cannot
and so they wander day to day
and feel their essence rot.
