Common elements: Earth, Water and Ice

Hereditary magic: Baxem are often influenced greatly by their environment. Most all Baxem are born with an Earth affinity, and they will usually pass this onto their offspring regardless of their environment. Over time, can also develop a Water or sometimes an Ice affinity, depending on where they live. These can sometimes be passed down instead of an Earth affinity.
Being born without an affinity is not unheard of, though it's not very common.

Elemental weaknesses/resistances:

Ice: If a Baxem does not already possess an Ice affinity, exposure to an extremely cold environment it will cause them to slow down rapidly and become lethargic. This regularly happens during the winter, and they can become inactive for months on end.
If the exposure continues for long enough however, they can gain an affinity for Ice. If a Baxem were to spend a year in an arctic environment, for example, they would almost certainly gain an affinity for it.

Baxem with an Ice affinity on the flip-side are extremely resistant to the cold, however if they do not retain the exposure to the cold, they can lose their affinity. This can happen even if they are born with the affinity.

Fire, Poison, Sand, & Acid: Baxem need to take good care of their hoofed feet, as they are susceptible to foot rot and cracking. These can lead to them becoming lame and very ill, especially if any infections spread. These four elements can cause and make these symptoms worse, so many Baxem are unwilling to go near deserts, beaches and swamps.

Common locations: Baxem love fish, and can generally be found near rivers and streams for the majority of the year.
They also tend to prefer the security of trees, as they will climb them when they feel threatened.
As such, most forests will have Baxem living in them. They are not found in tropical environments however, as the humidity is not very good for their feet.
During the winter months they will usually hibernate, so they will find somewhere secure to over-winter. This typically takes the form of caves, but sometimes smaller Baxem will make tree-top dens.

Climate preferences: Baxem prefer mild to subtropical environments, however as stated earlier they will live in cold habitats if they have an Ice affinity. While they love swimming, they need to make sure their hooves dry out afterwards, and as such they don't do well with humid weather.

Level of intelligence: Most all Baxem are capable of higher levels of thinking, but roughly 20% of Baxem whom are born in remote locations are born without the ability to abstract.

Language: Many Baxem speak Common and their own language, Pabia. Feral Baxem usually only speak Pabia, but if given the chance they could pick up Common. Baxem with lesser levels of intelligence are usually only able to speak some Pabia, and are unable to speak Common.

Trivia: While feral Baxem can be quite aggressive to each other, they are very rarely aggressive to other species and only ever in self defence. They are usually solitary when they live in the wild, as they are quite a nervous species, and will generally prefer to avoid others rather than confront strangers.
Baxem who are raised in cities are rarely aggressive, and are usually a lot more outgoing.

Baxem love fish, and most all of them know the migratory patterns of their favourite meals. In spring they can often be found congregating to larger rivers where fish are travelling through to breed, catching them as they pass through.
Fights can break out between strangers during this time, so it's probably best to keep your distance lest you get caught up in it.
