My Jeep - Jan 2014

pichu

This is my Jeep. It is a 2003 Jeep Liberty. This is the rare model that has a 4 cylinder engine, and a 5-speed manual transmission. So that makes it decent on fuel. This has been a snowy winter, and I am happy to say I did not get stuck once. Not even a little. Nor did I shovel it out at all. No matter how plowed in my parking spot is, this always pulls right out without issue. Also, notice my vanity plates =p.

It's not much, I plan on getting a wrangler when I can afford it. But for $4k, this still beats the crap out of most other vehicles in terms of capability. Not speed, no jeep is good at speed lol.

Yeah but for $4k you coulda gotten an older Wrangler with a 4.0l and 3 speed auto.

Auto is lame, I much prefer a stick. The 4.0l uses more gas and I don't need the extra power since this thing is on pavement 99% of the time since its my commuter car, 4 cyl can do 110 mph on the highway just fine, especially with the 5-speed transmission. And I really need a 4-door since I carpool often. I would love a Wrangler unlimited, But I need to wait a few years for the used ones to come down in price. For now, the liberty is just fine for what I use it for. And no wrangler will touch the 25 MPG I can push this to. I know 25 MPG is not great by today's standards, but for any Jeep that is good. And no, I won't find a Wrangler for $4k with only 60k miles on it. For $4k, I would end up with something thats beat up and has way more miles. There is a reason when I was car shopping I went with this XD. And the few times I have taken the liberty on the trails, it did perfectly. It won't climb a wall of rocks, but that is not something I really feel comfortable using my only vehicle for. lol. Maybe one day when I can afford multiple vehicles I will have a Wrangler dedicated to offroading (which then a 2-door would work for me) and have something separate for commuting to work.

The 3-speed auto is built out reinforced steel and concrete, and the 4.0l engine is unkillable. It's a joke among Jeep circles that the engine is broken in at 200,000 miles, because it's a V8 that's been de-tuned to just over 200hp. Also, if you're buying a new car for gas milage, specifically a SUV for gas milage, you have no idea what you want in a vehicle. Fuel prices are trivial in America. The Liberty is basically a vehicle that does nothing well and is the bastard child of Chrysler taking over Jeep.

Do you want to buy me a new car? I am not looking for great gas mileage in an SUV, but I also don't want to break the bank at the fuel pump more than I have to. I think auto transmissions are lame because they are no fun to drive, I didn't say anything about their reliability. And the 4.0 although reliable, is a gas guzzler. You are acting like I can just go out with my bank account that's in the double digits usually and just get a car that fits all my needs. My needs were and still are: 4-doors, fuel efficient engine, manual transmission (5 or 6 speed prefered), reliable, and capable in the snow / light off roading. My jeep is now at 160k miles and not had a problem, so its reliable. I have 4 doors, and I have a decently fuel efficient engine. After selling my old ford for scrap, I wanted to get a jeep but I only had $4k. I wanted to get a cherokee, but all I could find were ones with over 200k miles on them, so I settled for a newer liberty with way less miles for about the same cost. Do I wish I had a better jeep? Yes. Am I unhappy with my purchase? No. It does what I need it to, and will hold me over until I am in a better financial state to actually get the Jeep I want. And buying a car I can't afford is irresponsible, and I am not an irresponsible person.
