Campfire by the Lake by Aldin

Campfire by the Lake

Aldin

Though I can't draw, I do occasionally take a photo I like and am willing to share.

I shot this on "National Hot Dog Day" last summer (7-23-13) as I was renting what we call a camp (seasonal home) here in Maine on Dodge Pond about 3 miles west of Rangeley. The week went by way too quick.

Shot with a digital camera version of an Instamatic (point & shoot). Need to hold very still. Camera was brand new to me at the time. I'm still practicing "holding still" as it's very sensitive to wiggles.

We're facing north down the length of the 1.25 mile (2km) pond. 3,268 ft (just shy of 1km) high Spotted Mountain shrouded in the fog and clouds in the distance. The near shore is a quarter mile (400 meters) away. Half-way between "my" dock and the flag pole across the way is the deep spot of the pond at 51ft (15.5 meters). Lake was full of trout and landlocked salmon. Took me most of the week to figure out how to get them to bite, but once I did, it was a fun time.

It was a small 3 room camp (combo living/kitchen and two bedrooms), but perfect for me. Not so perfect to host family visitors. I would consider renting it again, but strongly encouraging family to not all show-up on the same day. Very reasonable rental price for the tourist-heavy Rangeley area. Very quiet pond.

This is a really nice shot! It makes me want to be there.

Very beautiful spot. Very quiet. If I had $120K, I'd seriously consider buying their neighbor's camp that's for sale. At that price, it probably needs a lot of work as that's about one-quarter what camps run for in that region.

Wow what a location - it must be amazing to just sit out there and look over that lake! Great shot!

It was amazing, but you needed 100% DEET after dark or the black flies and mosquitoes would carry you off. It was fine during the day, though. In addition, across the road from the camp was one of the area's nature preserves with over a mile of hiking trails. More hiking available just down the road, too. The camp came with a row boat, a bonus for someone like me with a high center of gravity (I'm good at flipping canoes/kayaks). I did the length of the lake three or four times the week I had the camp.

Ugh bugs! Had enough of mosquitoes in Florida growing up there. Here in Wisconsin, we have some of them too I guess... but the scenery is still amazing. There are just some things worth fighting through to live there! I hear you on the boat thing. I'm a taller guy and always am weary of the kayaks and canoes. Give me a wide boat any day!
