York Minster (2) by Aremay

York Minster (2)

Aremay

Getting a good grasp of the size of York Minster; the largest medieval church in the British Isles, can be hard. This view - from inside the West Door, down the nave and towards the choir, gives some sense of the huge scale of this building. Longer than any battleship commissioned in the Royal Navy, the Minster's sheer size was one of the reasons it was vaulted with wood; a serious fire hazard, as the Minster has found to its cost three times. Nevertheless, this vast space, lit by the huge stained glass windows on either side, remains a colossal monument to the skill and vision of the men who built it.
