Time went on, and Kei heeded his wise mother’s words. He always did what the pride asked of him, and was not scornful. Kei grew bigger and bigger, and growing a brilliant white mane. He longed to hunt along with his brother and sister and the rest of the cubs he had grown up alongside. The experienced lions, however, would have none of it. “It’s the middle of the dry season and food is scarce; we can’t afford to have him scaring away prey with his white coat. Besides, he would surely fail if he tried”. Kei was made to stay and babysit the newborns while the rest of the pride went out hunting.
