This is Oreo, the Argentine black-and-white tegu. She lives at the Newport Aquarium in Newport, KY, and is utilized as an ambassador animal for educational outreach programs. Tegus like Oreo are endemic to South America; however, she was actually wild-caught in Florida several years ago! This means that she was either somebody's pet and had escaped or been set loose, or she is descended from someone's pet. Either way, she wasn't supposed to be in Florida. She makes for a good ambassador animal though, as she's really a very sweet and mild-mannered lizard, and enjoys some good scritches and pets!
