Nana is a beautiful short-haired border collie belonging to a friend of mine. Nana is very intelligent, well-trained, and loves to please. She adores playing on the rocky, tree-lined beaches of Northern California, and when at home, she often guards her caretaker's favorite kicks. She is seventeen years old and a very, very good puppo.

When looking through the reference photos my friend sent me, I gathered feelings of warmth, love, and mutual protection. Nana seemed to be a very affectionate and loyal creature, and I felt that those qualities would be the best inspiration for the art piece. The White African Irises in the midground were specifically requested by my friend, as they surrounded the house where she and Nana grew up.
