Gehenna Spear (2016)

2016 art.

Chance Whitefang with his weapon, which I rarely drew between 2005 and 2015.

I'm just going to quote the original description, because even now it provides some insight into Chance's development, and the Gehenna Spear itself.

Despite how I royally screwed the pooch with my "development" of Chance Whitefang into some sort of clumsy asshat, he was originally-and still is-one of my most powerful and skilled fighters. I've never really drawn him using any of his abilities (he can breathe fire, which is actually a really fun power I should draw sometime, and can also fire a powerful energy beam from his mouth as well) or weapons, at least not in the past decade or so. I guess knowing him as a heroic type made him a bit more fun to embarrass and take out of his element, and that sort of swayed how others saw him because I was doing that more than showing his heroic side.

He originally carried two darkness-attribute weapons (despite being a hero, because I always found the concept of heroic types using "dark"-aligned techniques or weapons interesting), both forged from the same dark blue crystalline material, a battle axe and a spear. The axe is obviously useful both as a tool and a weapon, but the more powerful of the two weapons is the Gehenna Spear. Originally depicted as being very similar in appearance to the lances used by knights, I gave its design a much-needed overhaul now that I plan to re-implement it. While it still retains the original "crystalline" construction with the dark band running along its shaft, I altered the design to now resemble a more conventional spear or javelin. The dark band is used to assist in channeling energy to the head of the spear, granting it a powerful darkness/fire attribute when wielded by one that is properly "spiritually connected" with the weapon. His axe features similar attributes, and carries a similar dark fire "enchantment" on its cutting edges when charged.
Here, Chance is also shown with his spiked shoulder pauldron, although since he wears it on his left shoulder it's not fully visible from this angle. The sharp steel spikes, while not having any fun magic attributes whatsoever, do enable him to deal some damage if he shoulder-checks a target.

In the hands of a skilled and powerful warrior such as Chance, it is one of the more devastating weapons in my universe. Its ability to channel magic energy also makes it very useful for combo attacks when Chance is operating with a spellcaster ally, as thrusting it into an enemy (or throwing it as a javelin) means it can be used as something of a lightning rod/amplifier for magic-based attacks.

Recently, I have decided that the weapon is conjured, rather than carried--while it has a physical form, and is made of a hard crystalline substance, it can be deconstructed into energy and reconstructed again by Chance. It's a sort of "Mana-to-Matter" transmutation thing.
Most members of his race possess the ability to conjure a nearly identical spear. This ability also allows it to be recalled once thrown with relative ease.
