Keeper of the corrupted coppice

"There once lay a fortress where these plants now grow wild. However, after an assault by a barbarian lord it became a desolate place, where the plants would thrive, growing from the blood and death that linger there. The barbarian lord had set their eyes on the scepter of the ruler who resided there, a scepter with supposedly mystical powers, granting its wielder unnatural strength and vigor, just to name a few. The assault was long and drawn out, the fortress being an impressive piece of engineering with even the smallest entrances into it being heavily fortified and protected. No way in, the barbarian lord decided to starve the inhabitants and just wait outside. The barbarians held large, noisy, feasts on a daily basis to destroy the morale of the inhabitants of the fortress, as the food stocks inside dwindled. They would listen to the gluttonous roars of the attackers outside as they rationed pieces of bread. However, the defenders of the fort would not be so easily demoralized, as they well knew what kind of terrible things would befall any who would surrender to them.

The stalemate would last for weeks, lasting far longer than they barbarian lord expected. During this time, he became bed ridden, just days before the fort would surrender. As they charged in there was barely any resistance. dead lined the main square and the way inside the the fort lay clear. There they find the baron himself, scepter in hand, slinging curses and foul words at the invaders. A quick dagger planted into his chest finally silenced him, going down without much of a fight. As the barbarians laid their eyes upon that fabled scepter, they wondered why wouldn't they take it themselves, they did all the work while their lord lay in bed, sick, they could become the new leader. Indeed it was this greed that then caused them to turn upon one another, the small fight, slowly snowballed into a larger one, where all of them were fighting for the scepter. Eventually they ended themselves, perhaps a handful of them running away, but the fort itself now was quiet with its former inhabitants and the invaders dead. From this death the plants would grow and take over the entire fort. Still, the tales of the fabled scepter attract treasure hunters to the overgrown keep. It may be the scepters tale that attracts them there, but similarly, it may be the siren like calls of the keepers that cause them to lose themselves inside the fort. As the fort now is a labyrinthe maze of vines and leaves. The thick air causing confusion and hallucinations, sealing the demise of those unprepared."
