Auxiliaries were soldiers conscripted from conquered provinces. They were used extensively in roman wars as support infantry though there were different type of auxiliaries. This specific one is a syrian archer equipped with a composite bow. Rome would equip many skilled bowmen from areas such as syria, egypt, krete and persia.
