The introduction to my work-in-progress programmatic concert piece, “The Winter Solstice”.

Formatted in a similar fashion to a ballet (with scenes rather than movements), the Winter Solstice is based off an original scenario by myself which involves the traditions of the forest animals every year on December 24th, the day of the Winter Solstice is observed. The introduction serves to set the scene of the frozen, snow covered forest in the midst of winter.

A few notable motifs for the piece are introduced here, namely the opening statement of the solo flute and clarinet and the lyrical oboe solo near the middle. The theme played by the oboe will serve as the main overall theme of the entire piece and help connect it all together.
