"Cathartes Aura"
The Turkey Vulture has a wide range spreading from Canada down through all of North America, Central, and most of South America. It's possibly the most abundant of all vulture species in the world. Through studying the turkey vulture, conservationists hope to find ways to help those vultures who are endangered and in decline in Africa and Asia.
The Turkey Vulture's scientific name is "Cathartes Aura", meaning "Golden Purifier". This important creature's role in its ecosystem is to cleanse the land of carcasses, helping to contain the spread of disease.
(I also like to joke that the Turkey Vulture is the Patron Saint of NO ONE HELPS ME CLEAN AROUND THIS HOUSE, haha.)
