Commonorn by Cerulean

Commonorn

Cerulean

More weirdly self-effacing vanity.

For much of my life I've been pursuing unicorns in some form or another. This is a thing some dragons do. The company I sell fonts through even turns out to be headquartered on Unicorn Park Drive. Shapeshifter tho I am, I never dared to identify as a unicorn, however, because in my mind this was reserved for, I don't know, people blessed with something I didn't have.

And then my heart was touched by the briefest detail of Phoebe and her Unicorn, wherein Marigold explains that among "orns" there are "unique" ones like her, and also "common" ones, the only differences being in how eager they are to express their equally high opinions of themselves, and some infinitesimally telltale fashion choices. We are introduced to a common orn named Clip Clop, and here is this creature literally indistinguishable from a unicorn but who does not have the temerity to call himself one. I could not stop thinking about this.

Where many "inspirational" messages are unconvincing in demanding you accept that you're good enough, it is refreshingly affirming to be told it's okay to accept that you're not, because nobody else can tell the difference. It's good enough to not really be good enough. Only the unicorns can tell, and they're not threatened by the likes of us.
