The Future of Twist by Mr. Dubcat

The Future of Twist

Mr. Dubcat

As a superhero, Twist the Cat has fought many battles and collected many scars in his lifetime. At times, haunted by his intensive experiences, he would break down in his home and wished to escape this bruising, daunting life of a superhero. However, when he closes his tired eyes and dreams into the night, an image always appear. It is the faces of his people, forming a crowd around him. He hears the cheers and applause to appreciate his devotion to his city and the world, he sees the smiles of the children who look up to him. It is all overwhelming, but it is this dream that motivates him to continue. Being a superhero is truly a grueling and heavy responsibility, but knowing that the children and the people will be able to live under his protection is what he aspires for.

He would continue his responsibility for many years, decades even, fighting his enemies until reaching old age. Now, an elderly feline, his once bright and vibrant hair now faded, as if it was bleached, his injuries have made him frail, needing a cane to get around. With all this, it was no doubt that he needed to retire, but he was afraid of this. Although all his old enemies had either died early or reached old age just like him and just couldn't fight against him physically, his living enemies have been teaching a new group of villains and he had heard that they were planning on killing him and then attacking his city. As much as he wanted to fight against them, his weak old body would restrict from doing such actions. Knowing that they would kill him in his home and he wasn't there, they would hunt for him, he realized what he needed to do. With a backpack with only two bottles of water, he drove off onto the road and into the desert, without any farewell to his people. He hopes that his runaway will make his enemies follow as well, maybe even getting them lost somehow. Eventually, his car would run out of gas and continue his trek by foot.

There is nothing on the road, it is devoid of any sound but the howling and thunder of the coming storm and the crunch of the desert ground beneath his feet. Twist is left alone with his thoughts. He wonders if his friends had found out of his disappearance. He wonders if his new enemies have stormed into his home only to find nobody and are now searching for him. He wonders if the people have found out about his abrupt disappearance. Will they grieve? Will they worry what'll happen now? A cloud of sadness surrounds him, he takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. He thinks about the neverending dream. Maybe one day those children will become the heroes of tomorrow. Maybe they will remember me as their motivation. Maybe one day, they will be no more fighting. A crooked smile appears on his face followed by a sigh of relief.

He then stops to drink some water and continues on in the silent desert into the horizon.
