The colourful Puffleg is just 8cm tall and despite its iridescent and bright colours is difficult to find. For a long time it was known in only one location in Colombia from a few specimens, but has since been found in a few other close by sites. It is still considered extremely localised however and it is thought that there may be as few as 250 adults. After the local economy of growing lulo, a crop that grew beneath the canopy, collapsed due to fungal and lepidopteran pests the area has increasingly been under threat of logging and slash and burn clearance to grow illegal cocoa crops. The Munchique National Park is working with locals to restore their luco crops so that these areas will be protected once again.
