Designed as a low-cost, portable, and reusable anti-tank weapon, the RPG-7 stands as one of the most successful weapon designs of the Soviet Union. It is currently the most widely-used anti-tank weapon in the world and is in service with conventional militaries and irregular forces (such as rebel groups, insurgents, and terrorists) alike. Thanks to its design, the RPG-7 can fire rockets with different types of warhead including high explosive, high explosive anti-tank (HEAT), thermobaric, and fragmentation. It is currently in service with a multitude of nations including the Russian Federation, Israel (where it is kept in reserve as a secondary anti-tank weapon), Bulgaria, Iraq, Iran, and Egypt. It has also seen use with the Provisional Irish Republic Army, the Taliban, the mujahideen during Soviet-Afghan conflict, and various insurgent and terrorist groups across the Middle East. The RPG-7 was notably used by Somali insurgents during the Battle of Mogadishu to down two American Blackhawk helicopters. The weapon and variations thereof are currently built in Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, People’s Republic of China, and the United States.
