This pokemon inhabits the sacred forests in the mountains and creates illusions of one's worst fears to terrorize travellers, causing them to become lost in the forest forever.
Their tail is the source of their magic and they will die and become a sapling sprout if their tail is cut off.
The paper charm on their chests surpresses their power.
They have a two-thousand year rivalry with Ninetails.

Trivia:
It's markings appear to be based on bandit attire and it's face resembles Kabuki facepaint or a Japanese-style mask.
It's rivalry with Ninetails is a reference to Tanukis and Kitsunes, both are yokai capable of using magic and often compete with eachother for territory.
