OkamiWhitewings

The giant Stryx, taken by surprise, couldn’t manage to avoid the other Harpia’s attack completely. The strong wingbeat given to change direction quickly made the Stryx lose the propulsion of the dive almost completely and skewed her attack towards the neck instead of the face, giving the beast a chance to nip away a huge chunk of feathers from the back of the Harpia before falling down, out of balance. She did manage to recover it near the ground just in time to land, but the two Harpias were far enough from her and, with a defiant cry, she took flight in the opposite direction and went down into one of the canyons.

Etesian was still trembling after the experience, but kept flying until they were far away from the desert. The other Stryx kept flying along with her, checking on her from time to time, but she didn’t mind it: not only she practically saved her life, but she was too tired to make her go away.

Etesian stopped near the river in the forest for the night, exhausted and still trembling a bit. The moon was new, so the light was not enough to fly safely. The other Stryx landed with her and, after Etesian drank and sat down to rest, went away.

“Good”, thought Etesian, but after not even an hour she came back with a deer that she proceeded to throw right in front of the brown Harpia. She was too tired to eat, so she looked at the inquisitive white faced Harpia and then turned her head to nest it under her wing. She heard some scrambling and flesh being torn, then something landed near her head, startling her. The other Stryx had thrown a piece of meat on her to convince her to eat and was staring at her. Etesian had to eat the piece of meat to avoid it sticking to her plumage, then she went to sleep again. The other Stryx threw another at her. And did it again and again and again, until Etesian didn’t care about her plumage getting dirty anymore. So she started nudging her with her beak. Annoyed, Etesian raised her head, stared at the other grinning Stryx with almost enough intensity to burn her, got up, reached the carcass, ripped a couple of huge bites out of it and then went back to sleep. The other Stryx seemed happy enough with it and let her rest.

When Etesian woke up in the very early morning, the other Stryx was laying against her. A bit disgusted by all of the unwanted physical contact, she painfully got up. Her whole body was aching from the efforts of the fight with the giant Stryx and her wounds, despite not bleeding anymore, were still hurting a whole lot. Flying like this would be hard and surely not fast, but home wasn’t far away and she had to go there.

As silently as possible not to wake up the other Harpia, she took flight, but after a couple of minutes she wasn’t alone anymore. She was indeed flying too slowly, so slow that the other Stryx had to fly around her not to leave her behind. At this point, Etesian hoped that the other Stryx of the Aviary could make her go away.

Etesian arrived to the Aviary while the sun was rising and was immediately greeted by Nux, who was coming back from his usual night hunts, but as soon as he saw the stranger Harpia he darted into the house. Angry screams of Zarya came right after and Nux ran out of the house, straight into the dens. Zarya came out of the house as Etesian landed and, at the sight of the two big bloody lines across her chest, she rushed to her. Etesian sat down and let Zarya look at the wounds, but as soon as she touched one of them the young Harpia let out a low painful whine.

Not even a second after, the other Harpia, who had been circling above them up in the air unnoticed, swooped down with all her weight and, with open wings, let out a worried menacing cry. Zarya, who was focused on the wounds, didn’t even seem to notice her, being used to her other Stryx’ fights, while Etesian turned her head and looked at her in a mix of annoyed and “touch her and I’ll make you eat your insides” way.

“We were worried, I told you not to go away for a while. Was your friend behind you the one who gave you these?” muttered Zarya, nonchalantly ignoring the agitated Harpia. The young Harpia grumbled as the other walked around her, sniffing the air around the human, and stood right next to Zarya.

“You’re covered in sand. Did you go in the desert? I told you that there was danger there! You never listen…” grunted Zarya as she cleaned the wounds and the wild Stryx started to growling and hissing at her. Etesian put her head in between them, reciprocating the threat. Zarya got up and leaned on Etesian’s head that was at her cest level, facing the white-faced dragon.

“Well, don’t you worry. This girl is going to be like new in a few weeks. The wounds are not infected and pretty superficial” said the human with a calm tone while giving a soft pat on the other Stryx’s beak, who shook it annoyedly and ruffled her neck.

“And you” muttered Zarya looking down to her Stryx in a slightly angry tone “You’re not going anywhere until you’ve fully healed, got it? I think your friend will make sure of it and she can stay here as long as she wants”.

As the other Harpia booped her beak against Zarya’s face, Etesian let out a sad cry, knowing that she couldn’t leave even if she wanted to. She felt the white-faced Stryx grooming her neck and, with another, irked shriek, let her head fall on the grass and looked at her handler like “Save me from this, PLEASE”.
