Blade Under Mask: Baby Insect Fetal Development

WhiteMantis

I've been wanting to illustrate this for months, but just some months ago I managed to get on it. Before anything, I'd like to say I'm no biology expert (despite studying it a lot), nor do I seek extreme realism. This is just how I envision something in MY world, and how I imagine to be an ANTHRO insect fetal development. Also I'm not going in extreme detail, just enough to describe the development.

~~

It's very similar to a human's fetal development. All starts with classic fertilization, when spermatozoid and ovum together form a zygote. It attaches itself to the female's uterus, soon dividing into three things: embryo, yolk cavity and involucro.

The involucro wraps around yolk and enbryo, hardening like an egg shell to protect them both. The yolk will provide the fetus nutrition while the umbilical cord is not developed yet.

As the umbilical cord starts developing, the yolk is being slowly consumed and before it ends, the cord will be totally developed. As the yolk ends, the involucro also turns into a soft membrane, that will allow the baby to expand itself, but still being protected. It is connected to the umbilical cord and will allow nutrition, gas exchange and waste elimination through the mother's blood supply.

With 2 months, it will develop neural tubes, that later will become brain, spinal cord, hair and skin. Two weeks later, primivite circulatory system appears, though one week later, they'll have their first hearbeat, and members will poke out.

Brain cells and members continue to grow and at the end of the 3rd month, there will be hints of eyes, as well as development of intestines, contained within the growing umbilical cord. One week later, antennae will sprout along with tiny hints of fingers. The umbilical cord is almost fully developed.

At the end of the 4th month, bones start to show, giving better form to limbs, which keep developing. Hints of genitals of both sexes appear.

With 6 months, it already moves and joints are almost fully formed. Umbilical cord is 100% formed and yolk is almost gone. If female, uterus will start developing, if male, scrotum will start developing.

7 months, eyelids shut allowing the compound eyes to develop. One month later, fingers are already fully separated and the digestive trait starts working, now inside of the baby and actually digesting food. Antennae keep growing and so does vocal cords. Inhaling and exhaling movements can be seen, that will help their respiration through skin later. Livers start working. If male, genitails begin to develop.

With 8 months, the first hormones appear. In females, external reproductory system starts to form. Bones continue to grow along with the hardening of the the external exoskeleton, making their "jointy" appearance way more visible. Fat appears under the exoskeleton giving the baby more form. Antennaes are capable of detecting sound already. Umbilical cord is thicker and stronger to supply the growing fetus's needs.

With 9 months, heart pumps with a lot of strength. Kidneys start working and all senses are way more developed. Both sexes's reproductory systems are almost developed.

With 10 months, lungs are fully form and have branched themselves in many tiny arteries that allow their cutaneous respiration, as they have no nostrils. Antennae and feelers are capable of detecting smell. Hair starts to grow and so do claws. Reproductory system are fully formed in both sexes.

With 11 months, the nervous system is fully developed, the bones have hardened and the circulatory system is working in full now.

Finally, the 12th month. After an entire year of gestation, the baby is ready to be born! :3

Wings will develop after birth, as the child grows and sheds older exoskeleton.

OKAY enough of text wall, I'm sorry for the long description! But I really wanted to share my thoughts with you. I am open for constructive criticism too!

Thanks for taking your time to look and read it!

Very well done! This is certainly a concept I've never seen before. May I ask what inspired it?

I love fantasy and biology and I also love mixing the two together. Trying to come up with biological explanations to fantasy things is something I really enjoy doing! I also love the humane mother/son relationship, I wanted the insects of my world to have that kind of relationship as well so I chose that the females would carry the baby in their bellies instead of laying eggs!

    Oh god the insect babies are so cute ;__;

I love seeing you draw them as kids, and this is a really interesting concept! Anthro insect fetal development, man. Very cool.

Thank you so much ;_; I love drawing babies/kids, I think it just adds so much to the characters! There will be mooore! <3

This is still the coolest thing I've seen so far from you!

So this is an egg developing within a uterus?
