The Hoop Dance by Nomax

The Hoop Dance

Nomax

Commission done for the ever awesome Utunu , thank you very much! (all of them as usually found on FA! )

Stealing Utunu's description for the scene here because I'm lazy:
A visit to Smokepaw's village always proves interesting for Utunu. Different lands, different customs, new friends, and new celebrations! Utunu's always willing to join in on the latter, and Smokepaw's tribe seems happy to let him do so. Willingness, however, does not always translate into adeptness, and the hoop dance causes him some difficulty, much to everyone's amusement!
A cameo of Yelth too, since Utunu mockery wouldn't feel the same otherwise. ;)

Now back to my own ramblings!
Was a very tough one this one simply because of it's scale. Anyone who took a look through my gallery likely picked up on my recent preference for a use of one strong lightsource, and pretty much nothing beyond that to be able to play around with the shadows it creates. Well, hot tip here, if you're dealing with a large scale painting it might be advisable to set it into an overcast setting, or in this case an open shadow. Flattens basically everything , but it allows for a much better read of the important shapes. Having all the cast shadows streaking across the characters would've probably made this picture not only even more difficult but also a very busy mess. Pretty happy with how it came out though and a fun idea to illustrate as well i think!

I haven't heard the music, but I quite agree. This is a primitive type of situation so modern type of music wouldn't fit. I would imagine something like drums and possibly flutes. BTW, it's interesting that your commissioner wanted an African Wild Dog as the centerpiece of this drawing. I used one in a story I'm writing.

It's his character, so it makes sense :)

Yup. I have numerous characters that I've created for my stories. I wish I was an artist so I could do drawings of them so I wouldn't have to spend hard earned money to see how well I've described them. LOL.

Hey i've never seen a hoop dance depicted by a furry artist and i gotta say this is REALLY accurate especially the depiction of the eagle by the wolf on the left. VERY well done! ^_^

Thanks! It's always tricky to get something right that you didn't really know existed before the start of a commission, so it's nice to hear that! It is a nice addition to work on a commission if it actually leads to some research needing to be done! Never can learn enough!

I couldn't agree more! I was around hoop dancers for most of my young life and as i said this is a great representation of the form. I'm rather happy to hear that this, for lack of a better word, inspired you to look into it. To get it done just right and it really payed off, well done once more!
