Police Dog Ch. 13 – Headstones and Heresy (critique requested)

wwwolf

There is only one police officer in the small town of West Woodburn, England. His name is Forty-Two, and he is a Dog. Genetically engineered and bred to conform to the ideal standard, he can do anything a human can. His kind are so dedicated to their task that society no longer sees any reason to pay for human police.

Forty-Two's quiet, rural life is shattered when a murderer begins stalking everyone the Dog has ever called friend.

The greatest scientific advancements come from war, and the Dog program is no exception. Originally developed as living weapons for World War II, it wasn't long after that they were repurposed to their current role. It's only been fifty years, and not all men have forgotten that Dogs, like their masters, fought on both sides.

Forty-Two must track down the killer and suppress the case before an inquiry can be launched. Any investigation into Forty-Two's own past would reveal that he too has secrets to hide. While he is far too young to have any memories of war, Forty-Two's unmasking would destroy all confidence in the Dogs that now carry the justice system.

For Forty-Two all is lost. His home, his family, this future. All he can do not is bring vengeance to those who so richly deserve it.

This is not the final chapter. There is one more to come.

I like your pace; slow and methodical, but quick in its own way. And the descriptions are incredibly drawn out. I'd go into detail but I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read it yet.

      Thanks!
This was my attempt to write a mystery / police procedural. Many of my books have a very slow burn and lots of world building. It's one of those things that's both a strength and a weakness.

Really? World-building's something that I've been working on as well. It seems like whenever I make good progress I get struck with inspiration and have to go back and revise my previous ideas.

Interesting! I'm the opposite. I world build when ever I'm stuck for plot ideas. Creating a huge and interesting world tends to make for lots of interesting locations and setups for characters to stumble into.

Then again, I also tend to plan out my books quite a bit in advance to writing, I long ago discovered I hate the realization that I've just written myself into a corner!

I'm like that too; writing myself into a corner is one of my biggest fears. It's one of the reasons I do so much research before I write anything (which, incidentally, is why it's so hard to stomach having to go back and recheck my ideas once I've been struck by inspiration; after having done so much research I'm usually more than a little tired.)

I can't tell you how many times I've gone back and rewritten, edited, or crossed out weeks worth of work. And while I know that to "kill the darling" is a valid and time-tested work, and the revisions I've had to do enhance the story, it's still a tough pill to swallow.

              Yep. :-(

Though I long ago discovered, and tend to live by 'Heinlein's Rules'. My typical approach to rewriting is "@#$% it, I've written it already. I'll make it work!"
